Competition overall development plan auditorium maximum

Competition overall development plan auditorium maximum

The newly founded university was provisionally housed in former barracks buildings on the old parade ground. An overall concept was to be developed with the construction of further university buildings. An attempt was made to give the new buildings a predominance in the overall complex, an idea that was decisive for the arrangement of the main building masses on the site south of the barracks complex.

In the design, the auditorium, the botanical garden, the buildings for the Institute of Chemistry and Physics and the library are located on the north-south axis, which coincides with the axis of the old parade ground. The Museum of Natural History and the Faculty of Philosophy building are located on a newly created east-west axis that intersects the north-south axis in the southern third. The Auditorium Maximum forms the intersection of the axes. The buildings and the botanical garden are linked by a large platform; outside are the chapel, the sports facilities and the student dormitories. The Auditorium Maximum has been designed as a hall into which the large theatre-shaped hall and two smaller lecture halls have been inserted as self-contained components and are almost structurally independent. The spaces between the auditorium fixtures provide room for movement for the 500 to 600 listeners. The library building is based on the same concept.
