Competition Hammerbrook fruit and vegetable market

In addition to the development of a plan for the entire fruit and vegetable market, the competition called for a design for the wholesale market hall with a price offer for the shell of the hall. Detailed analyses were therefore necessary in terms of market operations, traffic engineering and construction.

Traffic in the hall is channelled via a rectangular road network: narrow lanes are purely secondary roads, meaning alternative routes, wider ones are main roads. The two peripheral wings of the building accommodate the entrances to the main roads, the sanitary facilities and shops on the ground floor, and the offices, meeting rooms, kitchen and restaurant on the four upper floors. Vertical traffic with the storage, refrigeration and maturing rooms in the basement levels is handled by four staircases and sixteen lifts in eight towers. The installations for the ventilation and air heating system are also housed in these towers. The hall roof was to consist of a system of wide-span tubular steel truss purlins and prestressed, torsionally rigid tubular steel three-chord trusses resting on clamped steel pillars with a concrete core. The stability of the hall would be ensured by the perimeter structures on the one hand and by the wind trusses arranged on the glazed walls to the north and south on the other.
