Competition theatre

Competition theatre

The building site is located on the north side of an undulating, city park-like green area. The driveway, access and deliveries are oriented towards the street, while the walkways and the theatre foyer open wide into the park.

A trench-like break that runs through the site in a longitudinal direction is used for a vertical separation of functions: an upper zone at ground floor level for the festive spaces and a lower zone for technical and artistic operations. This layering results in a minimal overbuilding of the park and a building height so low that only the stage tower rises above the trees. The design structure follows the principle of concentric circles: the main stage in the centre; the back and side stages and the auditorium radiating out in segments; the dressing rooms and ancillary rooms arranged in a tight circular arc, separating and sound-insulating; the glazed gallery in the outer ring, which widens into a foyer in front of the auditorium and from which visitors can descend into the theatre hall. A bridge connects the theatre to the entrance and box office hall on the other side of the moat.
