Competition student dormitories and canteen for the University Kiel
The new buildings were to be erected on the university campus in the north-east of the city. The design shows a group of pavilion-like buildings which, together with the connecting passages, form a square. It is characterised by a raised platform lined with walls and a lower, wind-protected central garden courtyard. The platform is accessed from the outside via four open staircases, and from the garden courtyard via a further staircase that leads into a trough-shaped meeting place.
The required facilities are housed according to their functions in individual buildings arranged at right angles to each other: to the north, the student administration, connected to a library; to the west, outside the forum, the prayer room; to the south, the music area with studio stage, music hall and exhibition areas and the canteen, which is connected to the beer pub, bowling alley and garden courtyard via an internal staircase; to the east, the kitchen facilities and a loading zone - long rectangular structures that also protect the forum from street noise. The pavilions with the large communal areas are spanned by wide-span steel trusses, with the ventilation systems housed at the same height. The rooms are divided up using freely adjustable and in some cases movable fixtures. Steel, concrete, dark-coloured brick, wood and glass were the intended building materials.
